Having in mind the importance of working on reading skills, the English department from our Elementary began its Reading Buddies program.
Different grade-level students are paired together for community reading time—an upper-grade student connects with a lower-grade one.
Reading Buddies allows younger readers to see what being fluent looks like as they have a peer model demonstrating reading skills; they can also acquire a positive role model with some intentional pairing. The older students develop social and emotional skills like patience and empathy as they work with their littler buddies.
We had so much fun during this activity and look forward to our next session!
